About

Hi there!

My name is Asiya and welcome to my blog!  I am a stay at home mom with 2 great boys living in Toronto....well actually the suburbs but I was born and raised in Toronto!  I used to be an actuarial analyst in an insurance company.  After I had my eldest son I decided my time was better spent staying at home and raising him.  I have always loved baking but never had much interest in cooking.  Since I became a stay at home mom making dinner was now my responsibility.  I love trying new recipes.  I've been blessed with a husband that loves to try new food and doesn't complain when things don't go well.  I started this blog in January 2011 to document my recipes and help me to improve my cooking.  I try to keep my recipes easy and healthy.

My family is from Hyderabad, India so you will find a lot of Indian recipes and other recipes with a little bit of Indian influence thrown in, which mostly means more chilli and garlic!  My husband is Pakistani and that really has changed my cooking and opened up my eyes to the vast variety of Indian/Pakistani cuisine...not just the Hyderabadi food I grew up on (i.e. Khatti Daal, Shaami, Talawa Gosh, Kheema...)  The recipes you find on my blog are what my family and I eat.  So you will rarely find recipes that are loaded with butter and cream.

I also write a blog chronicling the crafts I do with my boys called Keepin' 2 Boys Busy.  I would love for you to drop by and check it out!

I can be contacted at chocnchillies@gmail.com.  I would love for you to subscribe to my blog by clicking on the links in the top right corner.  Thanks for stopping by and I hope you will give some of my recipes a try!

  4. Assalamoalaikum Asiya,

Well I just stumbled upon your blog and what a nice surprise that is. I was a working woman too and now am a stay at home mom, who loves to cook and experiment with new recipes. One quick question, are you aware of the halal status of Balsamic vinegar?
    Keep up the good work.

    Jazakillah Khair.

    1. Walaykumasalaam,

Thank you for your kind comments. You can take a look at this link from SunniPath: http://qa.sunnipath.com/issue_view.asp?id=5924

They are talking specifically about white wine vinegar. I just Googled about whether Balsamic Vinegar is Halal and I find conflicting results. I am going to find out from our local Imam. I feel that this is one of those items that is controversial...some feel it is Halal and some otherwise. I will comment back here and let you know what I find out.

I would suggest you speak to your local Imam and find out what he feels.

Jazakallah for bringing this to my attention.

  6. Assalamu Alaikum Asiya. I found my way here via a comment you left at Familycook's blog. Did you know that we're somehow related to the same countries and yet in the opposite way? I'm from Pakistan (Karachi, to be precise) and my husband is from Hyderabad :)

  14. Loved reading your About! I'm a Hyderabadi Muslim too and I could so relate to you about growing up on Hyderabadi Food. I wasn't born in Hyderabad though and go there only for vacay. :)
And still being a teenager, it took me a while to develop my love for cooking ;)
Will follow you from now on, btw great photography! :)
